Understanding AI in Coaching: A Practical Guide for Health Coaches and Professionals

A grounded, evidence-informed, self-paced course that helps health coaches understand what AI can and can't do — so you can use it intentionally, ethically, and efficiently.

AI is changing health and wellness. This course helps you keep up.

Your clients are using ChatGPT for meal plans. They're asking you about AI health apps. Meanwhile, every conference is telling you to "embrace AI" without explaining what that actually means for your practice.

Most of what's out there falls into two camps: breathless enthusiasm that overpromises what AI can do, or fear-based warnings that leave you more confused than when you started. Neither is useful.

This course takes a different approach. It gives you the grounded understanding you need to make informed decisions about AI in your coaching practice — what it does well, where it falls short, and where the ethical boundaries are.

Should I be using ChatGPT with my clients?

Is this going to replace health coaches?

My client sent me an AI meal plan - is it safe?

I don't even know where to start.

By the end of this course, you'll have:

A clear understanding of what AI actually is

Cut through the jargon and understand the basics of how AI tools work - large language models, machine learning, and generative AI - explained in plain language for health professionals, not engineers.

Practical skills you can use immediately

Learn how to evaluate AI tools, write effective prompts for coaching-related tasks, and communicate with clients who are already using AI for health information.

An ethical framework for AI in coaching

Understand the ethical boundaries: client privacy, informed consent, scope of practice, and where AI-generated health information is helpful versus potentially harmful.

A scientific lens for ongoing evaluation

Stay current without the overwhelm. You'll learn how to assess new AI tools as they emerge — so you can make informed decisions on your own terms, not based on hype cycles.

What's inside the course

This course is designed to build your understanding progressively — from foundational knowledge through ethics and practical skills to hands-on application. You'll finish with the tools and confidence to make informed decisions about AI in your coaching practice.

Understand AI Fundamentals

Start with a clear, jargon-free foundation. This video introduces what artificial intelligence actually is, how common AI tools work, and what's relevant to your practice as a health professional. You'll also receive a glossary of key AI terms — a plain-language reference you can return to anytime you encounter unfamiliar terminology.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any technical background to take this course?

Not at all. This course is designed for health professionals, not tech professionals. Every concept is explained in plain language, and the focus is on understanding AI well enough to make informed decisions in your coaching practice — not on building or programming AI tools.

Will this course teach me how to use specific AI tools?

The course covers general principles for evaluating and using AI tools rather than step-by-step tutorials for specific products (which change too quickly to be useful in a CEC course). You'll learn how to assess any AI tool you encounter — which is more valuable than learning one product that might look completely different in six months.

Isn't AI in health coaching just a trend?

AI tools are already being used by millions of people for health information, whether coaches recommend it or not. This course helps you understand what your clients are encountering and equips you to have informed conversations about it. Even if you choose not to use AI tools yourself, understanding them is now part of being an effective health coach.

Will this course tell me AI is going to replace health coaches?

No. This course takes a balanced, evidence-based view. AI is a tool with specific strengths and significant limitations — especially when it comes to the relational, empathetic, and contextual aspects of coaching that are core to behaviour change. We'll cover where AI adds value and where it fundamentally can't replace human coaching.

How long does the course take?

The course is fully self-paced. The video content totals approximately 80 minutes, with additional time for reflection exercises and the final assessment. Most participants complete it in 1.5 hours.
